After three weeks without a game due to the weather Paulton were back in action, this time against top of the table Westfield. This was the third meeting between the clubs, Paulton having lost the two previous.
With a stronger team available than in recent games, Managers James and Roberts were quietly optimistic with the possible outcome.
Paulton lined up in a 4-1-4-1 formation which saw Filer sat in protecting the defence. The game got under way and immediately Paulton started playing the ball around making Westfield work hard. With Hooper and James combining well down the right flank it was not long until Paulton created their first attempt on goal. Time and time again chances were squandered, the best falling to N.Johnson who somehow shot against the post when it was probably easier to score.
Callaghan kept the scores level with some fine goalkeeping making one or two outstanding saves. Paulton should have been at least 5 goals up within half an hour but with the missed chances meant the scores were level at half time.
Westfield came out stronger in the second half, but Paulton stuck to the task well. A penalty was awarded to Paulton mid way through but it was well saved by the Westfield keeper. Again Paulton were playing well and it was not long before Paulton eventually took the lead with a superb twenty five yard strike from Hooper sending the ball into the top corner of the net. Westfield pressed hard to equalise but this opened up gaps that Paulton capitalised on and increased the lead with a well weighted through ball from Hooper to Gould who finished in cool fashion with a chip over the keeper.
The game finished with the score 2-0 to Paulton, and a well deserved result it was too. Every player played their part and worked hard to earn the victory.
A very difficult choice with so many players in outstanding for but
M-o-M went to T. Hooper.
